Thanks for Stopping By!

Well in case you some how missed our multiple messages and excitement over the last few weeks, Gallery Night was Friday and we hosted a show above Swig Restaurant in the 3rd Ward. Despite the threat of rain, we did end up with a sizable turnout. If you stopped in, thanks so much for joining us! If you weren’t able to make it, we missed you! But fear not, you can check out a few photos on our Flickr photostream.

Transition Week

Cubicle Sketch by Holly Segel

Wow, what a whirlwind couple of weeks it’s been!

Floral Vase SeriesLast week, Holly Segel was the last to occupy the cubicle in its “Art Studio” format. Out of all of the artists that participated, she really packed in the canvases. Huge canvases in our tiny area were transformed into a series of bird and nest paintings. She brought big boxes of supplies and really filled the space. Even better, you can see a few of them during this weekend’s Gallery Night! We hope you can join us on Friday or Saturday.

This week, we’re tying up all of the loose ends for gallery night and prepping the cubicle for a new segment . Any guesses on what we’ll be doing?

In the meantime, sit tight and enjoy our first 2 experiments and check out our updated photostream!

Stay tuned,

As I mentioned, Flux Design manages the 326 Gallery. They’ve been a big help in coordinating the show with us. Here’s a bit more information about Flux Design and how they evolved from Gallery 326:

Flux DesignIn 2000, Jeremy Shamrowicz & Jesse Meyer opened Gallery 326 in one of the Historic Third Ward warehouse spaces. When they initially rented the space, it was nothing more than a shell. Over the course of several months, they literally camped indoors while working on the installation of the new interior. Simultaneously, they began producing furniture to show at the gallery’s opening events & their team began to grow.

The use of scrap materials in those first pieces was as much a necessity as it was a design decision.  Restricted by a shoestring budget, they were forced to find resources wherever possible. In spite of this limitation, Shamrowicz & Meyer’s hard work made the opening of 326 on Gallery Night a resounding success.  The gallery not only drew a large turnout, but the pair managed to sell numerous pieces of furniture & sculpture. The success of Gallery 326 allowed the birth of Flux Design.

Today, celebrating their 10th year in business, Flux Design focuses on its custom designed & built furniture, sculptures and interior elements for hospitality, residential and commercial clients, but Gallery 326 lives on within Flux Design.

Flux Design continues to curate Gallery 326 art shows in a number of different venues throughout Milwaukee’s Third Ward arts district. Currently curating shows for  Water Buffalo, and both the 1st & 2nd floors of Swig, Flux Continues to work with local artists to help show their work, promote the arts and most importantly, to stay active and present within the arts community.

This July Gallery night will be showing the collaborative artwork of Jeremy Shamrowicz and Jennifer “Kya” Espenscheid of the Soma Gallery. Also showing are artist collective Innoboo Living Solutions, Permanent Baggage, and a show curated by Data Dog entitled Cubicle Chronicles.

Hope we see you there!

Week 7 :: Holly Segel

We have arrived at our final week. I can’t believe it! Time certainly does fly when you’re having fun.

Torso #1 by Holly Segel on Cubicle ChroniclesFor our final week, we’ve got Holly Segel set up in the cubicle.  She’s come with a plan for each day and so far, she is plugging along on some updates to various abstract canvases. I can’t wait to see what else she’s got up her sleeve. Us data doggers helped her haul up a few boxes full of materials, so she has plenty to keep her busy.

You can read more about Holly’s artistic background on her ArtMail page and see a few more samples of her work.

Overheard from Holly in the cubicle: “Trying to do big [art pieces] in a small space is actually kind of fun!”

Stay tuned as we polish off this week with Holly’s creativity and energy!

Friday Already?

We’ve had a great week with Fred in the office. He’s taken Johnathan’s harassment well and has been whittling away at some very nice paintings.

Fred Bell's second piece at the Dog HouseFred has threatened to move in full-time! And he’s not the first one to mention it. As much as artists need creative freedom and time develop their work, more than one of our cubicle artists’ have mentioned how much they get done in the cubicle. With less distraction than working at home where they can go to the kitchen, switch the laundry or see what’s on t.v., our artists have cranked out a nice series of work. The other side of that coin is that with the artists in house, we data doggers get to take a creative break by seeing the progress of their work, taking pictures, learning their process and making new friends. It’s been a win-win situation.

Next week is our final week of art in the cubicle. But with how much fun this has been, I wouldn’t be surprised if we go for a round two.

Stay tuned next week for some fun announcements. We’re getting organized for Gallery Night and will announce the location of our Gallery Space!

In the meantime, enjoy more of Fred’s work. Thanks again, Fred, for spending time with us at Data Dog!

Week 6 :: Fred Bell

Self Portrait by Fred Bell

Self Portrait by Fred Bell

As I keep saying, time is just flying by with each week that we welcome a new artist. For week 6 of our 7 weeks, we have Fred Bell in the cubicle. He works in oils and has produced many portraits both of himself and of others that convey a playfulness and a  sense of movement even in his most serious of subjects. His application of paint to surface creates more of an impression of a person and their emotion at the time of painting.

Fred also presents his work and others that he admires on his blog and he demonstrates his technique on YouTube.

Be sure to check them out! He was also featured in ArtMail Milwaukee not too long ago which you can view, here.

Fred studied painting with Henry Hensche at the Cape School of Art in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He is represented by Portrait Society Gallery in Milwaukee and by the Charles Baltivik Gallery in Provincetown.

Stay tuned for more goodies this week!
